Begining PvP
Hi, Ive been playing GW for almost a year now and have never really gotten into the whole pvp aspect of the game. I am interested to see what its all about (looking for a change from smite farming), and how i would get into it. If anyone has any advice, builds ect. please feel free to message me. I have about 3/4 of the game unlocked so i am able to do about anything, so please give me some ideas.

I'm going to have some fun with this:
STEP 1)Forget everything you know from PvE.
STEP 2)Go experiment in Random arenas, but don't take it too seriously.
STEP 3)Learn the pace of PvP in RA and get a general idea of what better players are using.
STEP 4)Forget everthing you learned in RA.
STEP 5)Develop a very thick skin.
STEP 6)Either PvP TA, HA or GvG with friends. If you don't have friends continue to step 6.
STEP 7)Read HA local chat and figure out what the builds are that people request.
STEP 8)Go practice those builds in RA until you are comfortable.
STEP 9)Find a HA or TA pug and make a ton of mistakes.
STEP 10)Repeat 9.
STEP 11)Make friends/join a PvP guild and stop playing with pugs.
STEP 12) Forget everything you learned.
STEP 13) GvG.

Hmm...a Warrior...right?
Yes, watch observer mode a lot. Especially the W/Es.
Try to get the build of a W/E Shock Warrior (or search it ^^) and play around with it in RA. After that, skip TA and go to HA ^^.
Have fun!

if your gonna use pve characters for pvp, make sure you ahve the best stuff, you want to take every possible advantage you can. you do smiting farming, and you have played for a year now.. i assume you have a hod sword, or enough money for one, buy what you need, the best pvp items are ones from collectors and greens..
most important imho, is to do research, do alot of reading, you wont get good overnight, and believe it or not, you will never stop learning new tactics/strats.
if you have any questions about playing a monk, or what items ull need then pm me IGN (Extreme Days)

Pretty good summary in my opinon. Except for the dreaded infinite loop :P.
I recommend asking a lot of questions, all the time, about everything. And expect to be flamed. Actually, if you start off your questions with "I'm a noob, but why ...." you're less likely to be flamed.

Exactly what this guy said. Also, if you're gonna use a pve character definitely get all the best equipment. I would suggest having multiple armors as well as weapon set to switch around with. (Do this mostly after you've completed step 10 and going onto stp 11. as you'll be experienced enough that that armor switching won't screw with your battle plans)

Random, random, random.
Find what you're comfortable with, and work on that. Just copying a build you find online won't work for everyone.
After random arenas, do some Team arenas. And then finally, when you feel ready, head to Heroes Ascent. Just be prepared to find a lot of bad groups, since you are most likely unranked now.

I did not do RA when I started pvp. Wat works in RA may not work in HA. Seen ppl who say they have many con wins in RA everyday... yet dk wat to do in HA matches.Watch obs more ( the higher maps) & try figure how ppl react to different enemy build & how they use their bar.But I think RA is good test ground for builds.hey... i like that step 4.

Thom's list is very good. Random arenas can be skipped for some players and you won't miss too much. I have welcomed players in the past who have never PvPed before into my TA teams with guildmates, provided them with a solid build, had them log onto our vent or teamspeak server with us, provided them with a brief description of how to use the build, and had them perform quite well.
New players to PvP tend to be quite nervous about PvP for fear of making mistakes. This is only natural. Having them on vent or TS with you really helps for reassurance purposes. In addition, it really accelerates the learning curve for the new player by allowing them to skip steps 2-4 and all the bad habits that can come with too much RA play. RA is a place to kill time.
Step 0) Downloaded the vent and/or teamspeak clients.

Listen to what players have to say. If they're telling you that a certain skill you're using is less than effective, ask them what their reasoning is for saying so. If they're sticking their neck out to tell you that your build is bad, they're more than likely going to be right. Find out why.

Quoted for truth.
In my (albeit limited) PvP experience, I've noticed that the team that communicates well is more likely to succeed.
Playing in a group (while speaking on vent) the other day, we had a team of riff-raff ... and we did suprisingly well. Our advantage? You guessed it! The Vent server. Keeping the team "in the know" about what the other team's strategy is, if you need help, if you see a weak point ... i've won many more battles using a client than I have without.
And also, i'd add:
step 0.5) Make sure your mic/headset isn't going to assault everyone's eardrums when you log into Vent/TS

In HA, having Vent/TS is a pretty good sign that your team has a chance at getting past the first few levels.
While CA doesn't teach you much about how to work with a team, it can teach you how to play your character. IE stuff like knowing which targets to attack, switching targets, knowing your bow/casting range, how to body block. Also good for stuff like practicing inturrupts.

Hall of Heroes is a great place to start (after you get some decent faction) because there is so much content and things to learn out there. If you want to try balanced build, make a char that is in that build and keep playing with it. Eventually you will get better. Learn from your mistakes. Pvp is so complex, I don't think we can tell you the best way to get started. Just go out there and kill some people!
PS: If you want an easy build that can get you some fame, go for IWAY =/, to answer your question. (Let the flaming begin)
